Find the deadline
Silence is what turns a notice into a lien.
Because opening it makes it real, and the deadline inside is already running.
Nearly every IRS notice has a response window, and the damage usually comes from the silence rather than the underlying issue. A proposed assessment answered in time is a conversation; the same one ignored becomes an assessment, then a lien.
Unfiled years work the same way. People imagine something catastrophic, when the reality is usually several straightforward returns filed in order, often with a smaller balance than feared. The first step is pulling transcripts so everyone is working from facts.
The thing we refuse to do is inflate a return. Preparers who charge a share of the refund have every reason to stretch a deduction, and it is the taxpayer — not the preparer — who signs the return and repays it later with penalties. Fixed fees remove that incentive completely.
